Gothard is a director who has specialized in innovative writers and new work since his earliest days at London's famed Riverside Studios where he was artistic director. He later was artistic director for the Leicester Haymarket Theatre from 1987 to 1990. He resurrected the National Theatre of Kosovo following the war. He has been a regular responder at the Iowa Playwright's Workshop, helping advance the work of Todd Ristau, Naomi Wallace, W. David Hancock and others. He has created writing workshops in Derry, Northern Ireland, and has been working as artistic associate for the world famous Abbey Theatre in Dublin directing Harold Pinter and Vaclav Havel.
