Chief Jones graduated from Roanoke City public schools, Virginia Western Community College, and earned a bachelor's and master's degree from Radford University. He joined the police department in 1981 and worked his way up the ranks from patrol to command. He has authored articles on law enforcement, teaches at Virginia Western, and is an active Lutheran layman at St. Mark Lutheran congregation in Roanoke.
