Guitarist Dave Stryker can add a fierce jazz burn to anything from a straight-on blues to a rock anthem from the 1970s. Hailed by the Village Voice as “one of the most distinctive guitarists to come along in recent years,” Stryker built his career as a band leader, teacher, composer and featured sideman with Stanley Turrentine, Jack McDuff, and others. Recently voted into the 2013 Downbeat Critics and Readers Poll for the 6th time, Stryker has developed an impeccable sound--full of mettle and possibility. He is joined on Jefferson Center stage by Jared Gold on Hammond B3 organ, and McClenty Hunter on drums.
Stryker established himself in the 1980s New York music scene when he joined organist Jack McDuff’s group and later saxophonist Stanley Turrentine’s quintet. With Turrentine, Stryker went on to play at festivals and concert halls around the world, sharing the stage with such greats as Dizzy Gillespie and Freddie Hubbard.
Stryker continued work as a featured sideman even as he began to lead his own groups, including the Dave Stryker Organ Trio, the Blue to the Bone Band, and the Stryker/Slagle Band. An active composer, Stryker also teaches music at the Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshop, the Litchfield Jazz Fest Camp, The Veneto/ New School Workshop in Italy, and The Cali School for the Arts at Montclair State University. His most recent CD, Eight Track, is a celebration of classic pop tunes from the 70′s reimagined by his working trio.
