I spent two summers at Gus Welch's farm near the Peaks of Otter in the mid 50's. As a D.C. city kid I appreciated the Welsh family and the farm life. They ran a camp at their farm and treated 6-8 boys as their own, we stayed in an old converted salt house behind the white house. Breakfast was in an old log attached kitchen, with Julia cooking on a wood stove. He let me, as an eleven year old, ride his horses all over the foothills of the Blue Ridge. His stories were long and great, wish I could remember them all. I remember, Gus's adopted daughter, Serena, 16 years old, Miss Poccahontas, as my first kiss, teasingly on my cheek. Gus left a a lasting good influence on me, through college, a military and Dept. of Interior career. Even living in Wyoming I miss the Blue Ridge Mts. and my experiences with a great Native American.

It's the 16th Annual Marine 5k Mud Run

Saturday, September 17, 2011 9:00 AM at Greenhill Park, Roanoke County, Virginia

Hosted By Roanoke Valley Marine Corps League Detachment 426 & Bravo Co. Marines 4th Combat Engineer Battalion

A Toys for Tots and Camp Roanoke Benefit.

If you have yet to take the Marine Mud Run Challenge, you're missing out on the cleanest fun you'll ever have with a 5K race! Many folks ask, just how tough is the course? We reply, it's as hard or easy as you want it to be! We have semi-pro runners down to the neighbor next door that has never entered a 5k race. Individual and 5 Person Team races and a Pollywog Jog for 12 yrs. and under.

One thing is for sure if you run this race the Marines will see to it that you finish it. Part of the Marines creed is to never leave another Marine behind. And for this event we will never leave a runner behind!

We on the wrestling team during Franks college years used to inherit the hand me downs from the football team for practice. Because I was in the lowest weight class I often got Frank's jersey. If only I had hung on to that one. I echo others when I say that your story reflects on those of us who grew up in the region. My family goes back a long way in Virginia and in Southwest Virginia. Our values, attitudes, and work ethic are not always understood by those outside the region. Two kinds of people now seem dominate our world--those who want to be somebody and those who want to get things done. Thank goodness Frank and the people of our region were those who wanted to get things done. They pioneered SW Virginia and our country.

This story gave me more of an affinity with Frank than ever before. We were classmates at Tech, although he ran in a different circle. I started out on the Tech track team, having been the 1965 VA gold medalist in high hurdles, but wasn't able to make the grade on college hurdles which were only 3 inches higher, but completely threw my stride off. The different sports occupied different areas of the stadium locker, and I remember the football players were like behemoths! Its hard to realize just how much bigger than the average joe they are when they're together on the field.
Like Frank I grew up in the same mountains, only further north, in the shadow of the University of Virginia, on a family farm. The 3 story farmhouse was built on the banks of Buck creek in Nelson county by hand by my grandfather. Usually there would be 3 or 4 families,( my aunts and uncles and cousins,) would be living there at any given time. The site was picked because it lay in a fallow meadow that my grandfather would farm. We had 2 big Clydesdales that my grandfather or Uncle Dee would use the plow the fields in the spring. I would follow and collect earthworms for fishing in the creek.
Frank's story brought back a lot of memories....
