Retire VA

There are many retirement facilities to choose from in Southwest Virginia. Here is an overview organized by care level and services provided:

Independent Living: Residents perform essential activities of daily living themselves and live in their own home, apartment or retirement community.

Assisted Living: Residents receive assistance with essential activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing, walking, taking stairs and managing medication, while maintaining a level of independence and privacy. At level 2: Residents need assistance with three or more activities of daily living, yet are not ready for a nursing home.

Independent & Assisted Living: Provides both levels of care as described above.

Nursing Care: Residents’ health-care needs are continuous, but not acute, with intermediate level and skilled, round-the-clock care provided. (Intermediate: Residents need help with routines of living, getting up, walking, taking medication and personal grooming.)

Rehab: A service provided by some nursing homes to help clients return to their own homes, rehabilitation includes physical, occupational, speech and respiratory therapies.

Continuing Care: A retirement community that serves as the residential community for the remainder of a resident’s life. These facilities offer a choice of services and living situations based on the residents changing needs.

Adult Day Care: Programs, services and facilities designed to assist physically or mentally impaired adults who might otherwise require institutional or long-term care and rehabilitation.

Home Health Care: Health services are rendered in the home to an individual confined there. Such services are provided when individuals do not need institutional care, but need nursing services or therapy, medical supplies and special outpatient services.

Non-medical Home Health Care: Services such as personal grooming, transportation to doctor’s appointments or companionship for leisure activities are provided to individuals confined to their home.

Hospice: Residents live their last days with dignity and comfort in a home-like setting.

Aging in Place: Provide services designed to help residents live in their own homes and communities safely, independently and comfortably, regardless of age, income, or ability level.
