  1. Retired City Employee says:

At least two members of Council were elected because they vowed to end Darlene’s tyranny … all to no avail. And no doubt Darlene will never step down on her own. Is there another way to call for and ENSURE resignation of an appointed official when all faith in their ability to do the job is lost?

  2. The Roanoker Editorial Staff says:

The 105,000 number appears on Roanoke City’s 1959 Financial Report, referencing the document’s use of that number in its per-capita calculations. Virginia Statistical Abstract (Weldon Cooper) shows the 1960 Census count at 97,110.

  3. KevinL says:

Was the population of the city of Roanoke 105,000 in its 1959 borders? Or, does the 105,000 include areas in Roanoke County at the time which were later annexed into Roanoke City?

  4. Jerry L. Spradling says:

Common sense seems to be in short supply in Roanoke City. I for one feel Roanoke will now go the way of larger cities like Detroit and become a ghost town. The present economy will take it’s toll on mismanaged cities and towns like Roanoke. It’s sad to see this happen. It’s time to face the facts and Darlene Burcham should have been sent back to Norfolk or anywhere but here, years ago.

I am sick to see how all this has happened right before our eyes and the city leaders stood by and allowed the Star City to just burn out.
