I'm a Roanoke native and I recently moved back from Austin, TX. ANY one who feels that there is a parking problem has obviously never been to a city of any size. To find a space within four blocks of the place you're trying to go in downtown Austin would be an absolute miracle...and NONE of the spaces were free. Be glad you're walking a few blocks in the beautiful Blue Ridge weather and not the 100+degree days in Texas!

Parking problems will continue to get worse with more downtown apartment complexes scheduled to open. If you don't think it's bad now, think about 5 years from now when hundreds more residents park freely on the streets during nights and weekends. I lived in the center of downtown for years and trying to park is annoying, but it's part of being in in the mix. I accepted it. Get over it and walk a few blocks. It could be much worse.

Parking downtown is not an issue. Between street, lots and garages there are tons of places to park. However, if you refuse to learn how to parallel park, plan to arrive a few minutes early, or are to cheap to pay up a couple dollars on a busy night then you will never be satisfied. That's why all the crap chain restaurants at the mall and other areas are always busy. It's where the uneducated masses go.

I agree with the gentleman below. There is plenty of parking around downtown Roanoke you just need to spend the time to look and get to know all the different lots. Coming down from your stronghold to attend a square society sacrifice once a month, is of course going to leave you disoriented. Now onto more pressing topics such as the lack of proper hitching posts and spittoons!

I fail to see how a pottery shop succeeding smack in the middle of SWoCo is a poor reflection on parking in downtown Roanoke. If I had an ice cream truck, it would make more if I parked it next to a playground than it would if I parked it next to a gym. It's called "knowing your demographic."

It has always confounded me how people complain how there's such a parking issue downtown. It is EASY to get a parking space when there isn't a festival going on.

There's usually a few spaces behind the Taubman and always a couple of spaces around Community High School. If you're coming downtown after 6, there's always spaces next to the Suntrust building on Jefferson. Should all these fail, Church Ave. usually has some spots open.

The issue seems to be that people aren't willing to make the effort to walk a block or two. It's the height of laziness.

The state of Virginia requires at all restaurants with a smoking section have SEPARATE ventilation systems for the smoking rooms, and this restaurant is no different. The hookah bar area is on a completely different floor than the dining room- We had a great meal there, & never even realized there was another area to the restaurant with a hookah bar. Some of the best home-made hummus ever!! Don't be so quick to judge until you have all the facts.

Community School is a gem of an organization in our Valley. They develop our future leaders, teachers and scientists, creating well-rounded humans. The students are nurtured not only in the academic realm but also socially to be better citizens, colleagues and workers. I find myself in awe at times when I hear an eleven year old girl discuss the complexities of world politics, listen to a fourteen year old boy help a five year old problem-solve an issue, or observe a group of kids pull off a superb and complex play. They incorporate service to the community in their curriculum and their culture.
Hats off to a great part of Roanoke!

Heather, I have to disagree. I am sory you feel stuck here and even more sorry your are fighting cancer – prayers and hopes that you will beat this horrible disease quickly – but you are wrong, Roanoke is a wonderful place to live. We have some of the best hiking in the country right in our back yard. We get nationally recognized acts at venues like the Civic Centers and Jefferson Center regularly. We have tons of restaurants and bars to choose from, there are wonderful festivals throughout the year, and most of our neighborhoods and school systems are perfect for raising a family with children. Yes Roanoke may not be Chicago, but those of us that choose to live here don’t want it to be (and we especially don’t want the ridiculously high crime rates that Chicago enjoys.) Please don’t hate our valley just because you’re used to a bigger city experience.

I spent two summers at Gus Welch's farm near the Peaks of Otter in the mid 50's. As a D.C. city kid I appreciated the Welsh family and the farm life. They ran a camp at their farm and treated 6-8 boys as their own, we stayed in an old converted salt house behind the white house. Breakfast was in an old log attached kitchen, with Julia cooking on a wood stove. He let me, as an eleven year old, ride his horses all over the foothills of the Blue Ridge. His stories were long and great, wish I could remember them all. I remember, Gus's adopted daughter, Serena, 16 years old, Miss Poccahontas, as my first kiss, teasingly on my cheek. Gus left a a lasting good influence on me, through college, a military and Dept. of Interior career. Even living in Wyoming I miss the Blue Ridge Mts. and my experiences with a great Native American.
