Torroba flourished in Spain from the time of Alfonso XIII, through Primo de Rivera, the Second Republic, the Spanish Civil War, and the Franco dictatorship; and finally, he lived to see a democratic Spain. He identified himself as a nationalist composer, but what does this mean in the context of monarchy, dictatorship, and democracy?
