The night will be hot. The dancing, fierce. The music, irresistible. The evening begins with a Star City Series performance to remember from Tiempo Libre. Not just musicians, Tiempo Libre are ambassadors for timba music—seeking to spread their enthusiasm for spunky Latin beats that mix R&B, pop, jazz and even classical influences in a distinctly Cuban dish. The Grammy-nominated group, celebrated for its sophisticated performances, has been featured on The Tonight Show and Dancing with the Stars, as well as at festivals and with orchestras around the world. After the show, stick around as Roanoke’s hottest night continues with the most exciting party in the Star City, the 12th Annual Latin Dance Party inside Fitzpatrick Hall.
Classically trained at Cuba’s premier conservatories, members of Tiempo Libre are modern heirs to the rich musical tradition of their native Cuba. Their critically celebrated album Bach in Havana featured a fusion of Bach with Afro-Cuban rhythms, reflecting the duality of Tiempo Libre’s childhood days studying classical music and nights spent playing timba music.
Bach was followed by My Secret Radio, which pays homage to the band member’s teenage years in Cuba—a time when the government forbade its citizens to listen to American music. The young musicians would fashion homemade antennas and secretly listen to the music pulsating from Miami radio stations. These clandestine sessions fueled Tiempo Libre’s dreams of living in America, where they could be free to perform their music. The album is their tribute to the many powerful voices that inspired them, including Michael Jackson, Chaka Khan, Gloria Estefan and Earth Wind & Fire.
The band includes lead singer Xavier Mill; Jorge, Raul, and Louis Betran Castillo on flute and sax; Wilvi Rodriguez Guerra on bass; Israel Morales Figueroa on drums; and Leandro Gonzales on Congas.
