Roanoke was born in 1882, and grandly celebrated its centennial in 1982. But it was not until 1983 — at the end of its hundred and first year — that Roanoke found its cultural heart.
Matt Allenbaugh has been on duty out on the Roanoke area’s most-used sections of the Appalachian Trail only since April. The 2005 thru-hiker has been out on trails far longer.
