THE PROPERTY: Home of Ann and George Steadman III, 45 Cardinal Road S.W., Roanoke.
THE CHALLENGE: To rejuvenate a bland 1970s contemporary ranch-style duplex into a single-family home with architectural integrity, style and pizzazz. The renovation needed to reflect the owners’ sophisticated personalities, integrate the natural surroundings and address the family’s growing need for space and comfort within a classic architectural tradition.
THE TEAM: Designer Earle Shumate of Building Specialists, Inc.; the builders, Building Specialists Inc.; landscaping plan by Chris Barlow of Garden Arts; landscaping execution by Ground Up; drive and cubing by Mike Sampson of Sampson Construction.
THE PROJECT: In order to give this family much needed living space, as well as additional natural day lighting, designer Earle Shumate advocated building up, rather than out, to stay in keeping with the landscape of this South Roanoke home. With the owners’ approval, the building team then framed a new second floor over the existing roof and created two bedrooms, a bath and sitting area at the top of the stairs for an additional 800 square feet behind a charming configuration of windows and a modified Nantucket dormer. When the old roof was removed, the opened space was completed and the two floors joined with a graceful staircase and two-story foyer. In addition, the front entrance was given new importance with the addition of a wide porch with multi-pitched roof, columns, railings, pergola, lattice work, garage and a driveway of interlocking concrete pavers. All work – from demolition to finishes – was accomplished while the Steadmans occupied the house. The final plus: incredible views.
