The Recipe: Blue Turkey Burgers!

I can’t take credit for this recipe. That all goes to my husband Tim, who admittedly rarely cooks. But I look forward to the warm summer days when he mans the grill for his burgers that we call Blue Turkeys. They’re darn good, and perfect for grilling season – or any time of year.

We typically use ground turkey for our burgers, but ground beef is great too. Salt, pepper and a little Worcestershire sauce add robust flavor to the meat. While Tim’s prepping the grill, I stay busy in the kitchen chopping mushrooms and onions to sauteé with steak sauce, a perfect complement to the tangy blue cheese he melts on top of the burgers.

So I have something to offer to the meal besides chopped vegetables, I prepare our favorite side dish for the burgers – sweet potato fries. Two sweet potatoes are chopped, doused with about two tablespoons of olive oil, seasoned with salt, pepper and cinnamon to taste, and baked at 375 degrees for 30 minutes.

As we sit down to enjoy our summertime staple, the blue cheese is melting beautifully between the savory burger and mushroom-onion combo. With the first bite, I sigh knowing my favorite season of the year has finally arrived.

Blue Turkeys

  • 1 lb. ground turkey (or beef)
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • ¼ cup mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 tsp. olive oil
  • 1 Tablespoon butter
  • 2 tsp. steak sauce (A1)
  • ¾ cup blue cheese

Hamburger buns (toasted, if preferred)

Optional Toppings: bacon, lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise

Add salt, pepper and Worcestershire sauce to ground turkey. Form meat into patties (number of patties depends on how thick you want your burgers). Grill for 5-7 minutes on each side. Add blue cheese for last few minutes of cooking.

Slice onion and mushrooms. Sauteé with olive oil and butter. Add steak sauce once vegetables have softened. Stir to coat.

Build your burger and enjoy!
