Eclair and Lemon Charlotte
Editor Jessica and I took advantage of the prime location of the newly opened Our Daily Bread by having lunch there one day. Located on Brambleton Avenue one street away from our office, I was excited about the lunch options, but knew it was trouble when we walked in and saw the gorgeous dessert case.
Read on to learn more about our meal, the fresh ingredients, and just how often you might catch me there staring at the pretty sweets.
Be sure to visit the Our Daily Bread website or their Facebook page for more info.

I’m excited to have a new place to dine just a few buildings down from our office. Having cakes and other yummy treats so close by might be dangerous, but totally worth it.
There was a big crowd when we walked in for lunch. Before I could decide on my meal, my eye was drawn to the glass cases full of pastries…eclairs, cakes, scones. You name it, it was probably there.
I went with the Lemon Charlotte for dessert, a ladyfinger cake topped with lemon mousse. It was light and fluffy with just the right amount of lemon flavor. I got the individual serving size, but the bakery also offers full-sized cakes.
Lunch was the tomato and mozzarella on focaccia. Fresh mozzarella, tomatoes and pesto sauce were a great combination. And the focaccia had the perfect amount of sea salt sprinkled on top. It came straight from the deli counter onto my plate, but would be great served warm, too. And you get plenty for your money…the sandwiches are big, leaving you enough to take home for later. Always a plus!

Like I said, there's a good chance on any given Friday, you might catch me at the dessert case, gazing longingly at the choices. Come to think of it, that's not just with dessert either. I also loved seeing the bread options; the freshly baked loaves sure would like nice in my kitchen - and I bet they taste great, too.
The lunch choice, while difficult to make, was the Hokie Bird. Freshly sliced turkey, lettuce, provolone, black beans, and hummus were wrapped up nice and tight. (I like to trick myself into thinking things are healthier when they're topped with hummus instead of say, ranch dressing.) The flavors were nice and I was especially glad to see the wrap didn't fall apart after one bite. I'm with Jessica on the serving size - while she and I shared our meals that day, I could just as easily have taken half home to eat later (or find it devoured by my husband without my approval).
Since it was opening week, the long line had me making a quick decision on dessert so as not to hold everyone up. The many choices had me going for one I recognized and knew I would enjoy - the eclair. It was delicious - light and fluffy, with just enough chocolate and sweet without feeling too rich. While that would be a great favorite to grab, I can't wait to visit again and try out the other sweets - the more chocolate, the better!
