JIM HOSCH, 36 / Environmental Educator & Community Outreach Leader, Clean Valley Council
Jim Hosch has spent years donating time and resources to enhance our community. Hosch has led and supported Get2KnowNoke, Roanoke City Parks and Recreation and Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism, collaborating on such activities such as a disc golf course in the Explore Park Master Plan; he also aided the funding success of the Mayflower Hills course by applying for the Capital Improvement Incentive Fund. He is heavily involved in his community, coordinating and planning “Wasena Weekend” to celebrate its centennial and growth, and is often seen installing bike racks in public centers, mowing lawns of vacant properties and planting in public spaces. Now with the Clean Valley Council, Hosch is excited to contribute even more to the livability of our city. I enjoy seeing the results of individuals’ efforts impact our community in a positive way, and love seeing the momentum of Roanoke’s ‘awesome’ continue to build,” he says.

- Assessed needs for park amenities in the Old Southwest neighborhood by collaborating with stakeholder groups to include city officials and departments, neighborhood groups, local businesses and citizens
- Initiated and maintain dialogue with residents, city officials and police to improve the safety and conditions of the neighborhood resulting in the elimination of unfit housing and a more engaged neighborhood watch

From the Nomination: “When I think about Jim Hosch, I really think about how dedicated he has been to his projects; projects which have not only been impactful to our community and the Roanoke Valley, but have also been time-consuming while not in the spotlight with all the back pats that can keep community volunteers motivated. He also demonstrates a quick speed to trust, attributable to his genuine demeanor, easy-going personality and positive, forward thinking. And his track record speaks for itself, having coordinated multiple community partners to develop amenities and create events. Also, his keen awareness and dedication to participant experience amplifies his efforts by creating enthusiasm and involving others in the community. Hosch was nominated for the Neighborhood Awards for his planning and installation of the Highland Park Disc Golf course, a project that has been a huge success and is completely in line with Roanoke's goal to establish itself as an outdoor recreation destination with a diverse draw. Hosch's notable volunteer efforts have been outside of his profession for many years, dedicating time and resources to enhance our community. That speaks volumes about him. Now employed by the ‘clean and green’ nonprofit CVC, Hosch is able to contribute more to his passion to improve the livability of the Roanoke Valley.”
What do you love about Roanoke?
Hosch: “SO many things! You can really make a difference here if you want to. There are many ways to get involved, and if you are driven to share your passion, you can make great things happen. It’s a very easy place to live, and it’s full of fun. There is a never a shortage of things to do.”
How does your passion impact our community? Hosch: “My passion is to bolster a sustainable and livable community. I’ve connected to people, organizations and events that promote these values so we all enjoy a fun and fulfilling Roanoke life. I love the idea of bringing people together to make something new happen. I am committed to contributing individually but am inspired by what we can do collectively!”
