Great Country 5 Miler

Enjoy this relatively new trail race that features dirt road and single-track trail as you wind your way through Franklin County’s Waid Park, a true hidden gem.

Big Lick Beertopia

One of the largest beer festivals in the Mid-Atlantic brings over 45 local, regional, and national breweries to LewisGale Field. The event also features “Cider Alley” for hard cider enthusiasts.

Saturday, June 27:

Smith Mountain Lake SUP Race

Grab your paddle and board and come on out for the third annual Stand up Paddle board Race and Demo! The 3-mile race will have both men’s and women’s divisions on beautiful Smith Mountain Lake. Spectators are welcome to watch the race and then try out a full range of stand-up paddle boards from Amundson, Stride, NRS, and more. The free SUP demo will be held after the race.

Sunday, June 28:

The Artie Levin Memorial Century

Celebrate the life of fitness guru and Blue Ridge Bicycle Club founder Artie Levin with this fun, scenic ride with routes from 15 to 100 miles. All start at Green Hill Park.

Wednesday, June 30:

Wednesday Night Mountain Bike Rides

Every Wednesday Cardinal Bicycle hosts two different mountain bike rides, on Mill Mountain and Explore Park. One is a fast-paced, for the more advanced riders, while the second option is built for the beginner…or those who like the occasional break to catch their breath.

Body by Parkway” Running Club

Parkway Brewing knows how to entice people to come out and get fit…beer! Join fellow running and beer enthusiasts at Parkway Brewery every Thursday. Runs leave the brewery at 6pm and do a 3.2 mile out & back run on the Battleground Trail in Salem. Club members are rewarded after participating in three runs with a beer for a penny. So support local, get fit, drink beer…what could be better?

Get to Know Your Bike Basics

Looking to get back into cycling or have your sights on a specific cycling event? Join Starlight Bicycles and their free class where you will learn how to fix a flat as well as all the parts that make up your bike. Starlight Bikes, Grandin Village.

Kayak Demo Day

Join the folks from Back Country Ski and Sports for their annual kayak demo day on the New River. Try out the latest kayaks, SUPs, helmets, paddles, and PFDs.

Kids in Training Triathlon

The TriAdventure Kids In Training (KIT) Triathlon was created to provide an educational platform for youth to have fun staying active. By focusing on swimming, cycling and running, the hope is to introduce participants to activities that offer lifelong healthy opportunities for physical achievement. Distances are appropriate for all children to successfully complete the race. This event is open to children ages 4 – 10, all levels of ability.

Saturday, July 18:

New River Paddle Fishing Tournament

Back Country Ski and Sports and Montgomery County Parks and Rec present the 6th Annual New River Paddle Fishing Tournament. Test your bass-fishing skills in the prime waters of the New River against other local anglers and see if you have what it takes to land the big one! The tournament format is catch, photo and release.

July 22-26:

FloydFest

Award winning five-day celebration of music and art is nestled in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains near Floyd and features over 100 performers on 10 stages and more!

Sunday, July 26:

Adventure Weekend!

Ziplining, climbing wall, canoeing or tubing on Craig’s Creek, or mountain biking around Wilderness Adventure and the surrounding national forests: Choose an activity (or two or three!), bring your friends and family! A great day out if you pack a lunch and add hiking or paddling around the pond into the mix. Activities begin at 10 am or 1pm and require reservations. Wilderness Adventure at Eagle Landing, New Castle.

Friday Night Lights Moonlight Madness Mountain Bike & Trail Run

This event has everything a trail junkie could want with a 25K mountain bike race followed by a 12K trail running race starting at 11:59 p.m. on the highly acclaimed trails of Montvale Park.

Lake Moomaw Open Water Swim

Dip your toe into the open water with this 1-mile swim in the Alleghany Highlands.

Sunday, August 2:

Paddle Sports Day at Smith Mountain Lake

A perfect day to explore canoes, kayaks and stand up paddleboards all in one convenient location. Sessions start on the hour every hour from 10 am-3 pm. Join ACA-certified instructors as they introduce you to these three types of paddle craft and give guided practice time on the lake. Drop in for one hour or stay for multiple hours. Ages 8-14 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. Canoes, kayaks and stand up paddle boards will be provided.

Thursday, August 6:

RIMBA Lunch Ride

The RIMBA Lunch Vacation Ride™ leaves at 12:30 pm every Thursday from UnderDog Bikes. Ride duration is under an hour and we commonly grab a bite at Fork in the Alley at the ride’s conclusion.

Everyone on the ride is super friendly and riders of all levels are welcome to participate.

Kayak Demo Day

Join the folks from Back Country Ski and Sports for their annual kayak demo day at the Salem Rotary Park and Roanoke River. Try out the latest kayaks, SUPs, helmets, paddles, and PFDs.

Microfestivus highlights nearly 130 beers for your sampling pleasure. Fes’ also features live music, local food and a great community atmosphere in the heart of downtown Roanoke at Elmwood Park.

Pub Runs

Lace up your shoes and join other runners every Tuesday for the Fleet Feet Sports Pub Run. Each pub run includes a three- and five-mile route option. And no matter the distance you choose, you’re invited for post-run beers at the Wasena City Tap Room.

Thursday, August 13:

Brew-Tie

Have a beer and tie some flies at the monthly “Brew-Tie” at Orvis Roanoke. Corned Beef & Company is hosting the get-togethers on the third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. Bring your tying kit, socialize with other tiers, and simply have a good time. There is no cover charge to attend.

Saturday, August 15:

19th Annual Fab 5K

The Fab 5k is about the flattest course you could create in Southwest Virginia. It winds through the asphalt and gravel roads and onto some of the grassy fields of Green Hill Park to make a very fast cross country course. It is perfect for all levels of fitness from the elite runner to walker.
