Web Exclusive: “A Taste of Virginia Tech”

A Taste of Virginia Tech

As a Virginia Tech alum I admit, it didn’t take much to pique my interest in a VT-themed cookbook. But when I learned said cookbook would contain not only a collection of great game-day recipes, but also some of the most tantalizing dishes from more than 20 of Blacksburg’s finest restaurants, I was sold.

“A Taste of Virginia Tech,” by Krista Gallagher and Kris Schoels, brings together 80 recipes straight out of some of the best kitchens and tailgates in the Hokie Nation. From the London Broil at West End Market – VT’s premier on-campus dining hall – to dishes from popular local restaurants like Backstreets, Zeppoli’s and Cabo Fish Taco, it’s any hungry Hokie’s dream come true. Here’s a peek at five recipes from the book!

West End Market’s Grilled Old Hickory Burger. This is Krista’s husband’s favorite dish – and the one that he still orders every time he visits Blacksburg. (Makes 6)

Rob’s Armadillo Tails. The Quillen tailgate is one to visit on game day. With a TV broadcasting pregame shows and not one but two gigantic grills-what more could you want? (Serves 4-6)

Rail Brownies. These brownies won’t leave you with a headache the next day – unless you get a sugar hangover from eating the entire pan in one sitting, of course. So go ahead, indulge in as many as you wish . . . they are that good!

ONLINE EXCLUSIVE – West End Market’s Cutting Edge Deli’s Hokie Club. This is West End’s most popular sandwich.  Choose the best deli meat you can afford and look for thick potato bread.

ONLINE EXCLUSIVE – Backstreets Fried Mushrooms. Backstreets is another fine example of how important loyal patrons are to local businesses here. This restaurant has serviced the town since 1984, when it was located on a “back street” in downtown Blacksburg.
