Devin Tobin, 29 / Chief Operations Officer, LewisGale Hospital Montgomery

Devin Tobin stepped into her latest role in August 2021, having previously served as a vice president of operations for LewisGale in Salem. She earned her Master of Healthcare Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2018 and is a member of American College of Healthcare Executives. She oversaw the construction of a $3 million rooftop helipad to expedite patients’ air transport; oversaw the upgrade of two endoscopy suites to support higher complexity gastroenterology services; launched the renovation of the Women’s Center; and launched several new service lines, including weight loss surgery with a comprehensive surgical program offering individualized treatments and education. She also assisted with the launch of the midwifery program, which delivered 100 newborns in its first 12 months. “I am passionate about creating a healthier tomorrow for SWVA,” Tobin says. “As a leader within LewisGale Regional Health System, I have the unique privilege of supporting our teams in their commitment to the care and improvement of human life. We believe in always doing what is right for the patient and that excellent people make excellence happen.”

  • Earned Bachelor of Health Science, University of Florida, 2015
  • Serves on the Local Planning Committee for the Central Virginia Healthcare Executives Group (CVHEG)
  • Active with the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce; emceed the Chamber’s Top 25 Best Places to Work, 2021

From the Nomination: ““Devin Tobin embodies The Roanoker magazine’s 40 Under 40 Awards criteria for honoring the dynamic young professionals who work tirelessly to affect positive change and enhance the Southwest Virginia community. … Tobin brings nearly 10 years of healthcare experience to her new role. In her position as COO, Tobin builds strategic alliances and partnerships within the organization to collaboratively execute business strategies, leads the team to enhance service quality and support the organizational mission of commitment to the care and improvement of human life. Tobin joins the LewisGale Hospital Montgomery team as they celebrate their 50-year milestone and launch a $16 million operating room expansion including two new, state-of-the-art operating rooms (ORs), a 15-bed Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), a sterile storage room, and support space. … Tobin is a “mover and a shaker.” Her keen ability to question that status quo and push for operational excellence while effectively executing strategic initiatives sets her apart from her young healthcare executive peers. Tobin’s passion for healthcare stems from her personal experience supporting her mother in her mental health struggles and translates to the empathetic and caring approach she takes with her teams, patients, and families throughout the SWVA community. … Tobin’s interest in mental health awareness and care comes from personal experience. For years her mother, who was diagnosed bipolar, struggled with drug and alcohol addiction. When she and her father were able to get her mother admitted to rehab, her mother’s condition improved. But care was cut short when the family’s insurance company refused to pay for the full course of recommended treatment. ‘I was devastated because I had been fighting my mother’s addictions alongside her for years, and I finally felt that we were winning the battle,” Tobin said. It was at that moment Ross decided on a career. “I thought, ‘What can I do in the future to make sure this doesn’t happen to someone else?’” she said. “I knew that I wanted to dedicate my life to transforming the health care system.’ … Supporting LewisGale is a family affair for Tobin, with her husband, Sean, serving as the director of physician and provider relations and their first child, Luke, was born at LewisGale Medical Center in 2021.”

What do you love about Roanoke?

Tobin: “The people! Whether you are walking through the grocery store or hiking on the Blue Ridge Parkway, you are always met with a friendly smile and warm southern greeting. Roanoke is the place where I became a wife and mother and I am so blessed to be able to raise my family in this beautiful part of the country.”

How does your passion impact our community?

Tobin: “I am passionate about creating a healthier tomorrow for Southwest Virginia. As a leader within LewisGale Regional Health System, I have the unique privilege of supporting our teams in their commitment to the care and improvement of human life. We believe in always doing what is right for the patient and that excellent people make excellence happen.”
