Today, a new Virginia Historical Marker was unveiled along Catawba Road, recognizing Botetourt County’s place on the legendary TransAmerica Bicycle Trail (USBR 76).
The marker tells the story of Bikecentennial ’76, the cross-country bicycle ride that celebrated America’s Bicentennial and inspired what would become one of the nation’s most iconic cycling routes. More than 4,000 cyclists rode the original 4,250-mile journey from Virginia to Oregon in the summer of 1976, with Botetourt County serving as a memorable stop along the way.
The dedication featured speakers from the Adventure Cycling Association, Virginia Tech, the Botetourt County Historical Society, the Botetourt County Chamber of Commerce, and a participant in the original 1976 ride. A statement from the Virginia Department of Historic Resources was also shared during the ceremony.
Attendees also celebrated the unveiling of the new USBR 76 Resting Bench, created by local artists at Lift Arc Studios and funded in part through the PEDAL project. The bench symbolizes the hospitality and welcoming spirit that Botetourt County continues to offer cyclists from around the world.
Whether you’re riding across the country or exploring close to home, we’re proud to be part of a route that has connected people, communities, and history for nearly 50 years.
