With our sixth and second-to-last post of the House to Home series, we’re seeing how the White home renovation is nearly complete. To recap: the Whites found their perfect 1960s ranch house to convert into their jewel box home, thanks to help from Marguerite and Frank Saunders of MKB Realtors. Once they met Chris Yearsley at Windfall Construction, they learned about selecting product, avoiding unexpected expenses and the actual renovation process.Â
When we first started, the original home needed new wiring, HVAC system, and major updates in the kitchen and bathrooms. The Whites also wanted their floors to match once they pulled up the old carpet.
New floors have been sanded, primed, and painted to match the wood already present. They are pristine and one would be hard-pressed to see where the new wood starts and old wood ends. Cabinets, as you can see from our gallery, are now up in the kitchen as well.
The new master bathroom, attached to the now-larger master bedroom (along with new ceiling fans), is complete. Yearsley spent time cutting and gluing tiles (piece by piece!)Â into the new shower and tub. When we met up, he was finishing putting in the shower door, including the small rubber stops to prevent the door from crashing into the wall.
“This is actually the most stressful time of the renovations,” says Yearsley. “Everyone scatters to find all the little pieces – light switch covers, paint touch-ups, cabinet drawer handles, things like that – and then we have to bring it all in and make sure we’ve got all the parts in place.”
What’s left, you might ask? Countertops, for one, including a unique piece for the kitchen that shapes into a wave to prevent lack of space between seating and the fireplace. The double-sided fireplace is the last big piece to be finished, including those beautiful wooden mantels purchased weeks ago in Floyd, VA. The stove is present, but must be connected, as well as microwave, fridge, and dishwasher. For the most part, it is, as Yearsley says, the little pieces that must come together for the final touches.
