From House to Home: Selecting Your Products

The House to Home blog series is sponsored by MKB Realtors.

Welcome to our home renovation blog series, where we dive into the process of buying and renovating a house in only a few weeks. This week’s post focuses on the products that go into your home to make it just right!

See the first post in the series post on buying the ideal home here.

Our second post on beginning renovations, including construction advice, can be found here.

After the Whites found their home (thanks to MKB Realtors Marguerite and Frank Saunders), the next step was to hire a trusted contractor for the heavy lifting. They found that in Chris Yearsley, owner of Windfall Construction, who quickly began work on renovating their house into a jewel box home.

The next step? Finding the right products that the Whites would love, as well as last many years.

The Whites started their product search at Lowe’s, where they found specialists who could help with their needs. Kenny White, Kitchen Project Specialist, assisted them with questions about kitchen installations for items such as a new sink, dishwasher, stove, and fridge.

Robin Miles, Project Specialist for Interiors, even made the trip out to the White’s house for a personal look. She offered advice on products that would work best with the home renovation.

“They were both wonderfully patient,” says Mrs. White. “I’m so grateful for the work and advice I received!”

You can see in the gallery they also purchased a double sink vanity, as well as several Kohler items that will be installed throughout the home. In addition, the Whites realized that some pieces of the 1960’s ranch house are no longer available, such as the cabinet handles. They decided to keep the pieces, but update them by spray-painting them a dark silver to better match their soon-to-be-installed cabinetry and doors.

The Whites also contacted Bill at St. Pierre Woodworking and Sawmill, based in Floyd, VA. According to Bill, some of the coolest things he gets from salvaged buildings are long hand-hewn beams that are made into beautiful mantles. He can either saw straight edges on all sides of the log or can keep the live edge look. Once finished, they’re perfect to put above a fireplace or stove.

“When you don’t have an unlimited budget but want to make your home unique, you need to find folks like Bill to deliver them,” says Mr. White. “We can’t wait to see the finished look in each room with such cool woodwork!”

The Whites bought three wood beams that will eventually be used as mantles in their kitchen, living room, and downstairs basement rec room. You can see the beautiful pieces in the first image in the above gallery.

Stay tuned for Part 4 of our House to Home blog series as we see even more details of the White house becoming their new home!
