Local Animal Shelters Urge Community to Adopt as Dog Adoptions Decline Across the Region

Angels of Assisi and the Regional Center for Animal Care & Protection (RCACP) are urging community members to consider adopting from local shelters as dog adoptions continue to decline across the Roanoke Valley and surrounding region.

Leaders from both organizations recently met to discuss concerning adoption trends they have experienced so far this year, particularly surrounding dogs. While adoption numbers have slowed dramatically compared to previous years, the number of dogs entering shelters continues to rise.

At Angels of Assisi alone, 256 dogs have already entered the organization’s care so far this year, putting increased pressure on shelter space, foster homes, staffing, and resources.

“This isn’t just something one shelter is experiencing. We’re seeing it across our entire region,” said Ethan Claridge, Director of Adoptions. “Dogs are staying in shelters longer, while more continue arriving every week.”

Staff hope to remind potential adopters that shelters are full of dogs of every breed, size, age, and temperament. Whether someone is looking for an active hiking companion, a laid-back senior dog, or a small breed, shelters have a wide variety of animals waiting for homes.

At Angels of Assisi, every adoptable dog receives extensive veterinary care before adoption. Dogs are examined by veterinarians, spayed or neutered, microchipped, and kept up to date on vaccines and monthly preventatives before going home. This helps remove the immediate financial and logistical burden many adopters face after bringing home a new pet.

In addition, if a newly adopted pet becomes ill within 10 days of adoption, Angels of Assisi will cover the cost of treatment if the pet is brought to the organization’s Community Pet Clinic. Adopters can also continue utilizing the clinic’s low-cost veterinary services long after adoption.

Every adoption creates space for another animal in need and helps shelters continue lifesaving work throughout the region.

Angels of Assisi’s Adoption Center is open daily 12-6pm, no appointment needed.
