Places You Never Go — Virginia Tech’s Locker Room (Circa 2012)

It has more in common with a nightclub than your high school locker room, with a bass-thumping sound system and TVs on every wall. The woodwork is high-end and high-tech. A vacuum system pulls air across cleats and pads and all the other stuff that makes most locker rooms smell like… uh, locker rooms.

The posh feel of what is one of the best spaces in the NCAA belies the reality that in spite of the amenities, college kids call this place home. Clothes and shoes and socks litter the floor. College kids are like that, you know.

It is the inner sanctum of Virginia Tech Football. It’s where players contemplate. Coaches motivate. And, if it’s a good season we hope for, winners celebrate.
