Grandin Village: Sweet Treats, Fall Fashion and More

A beautiful Saturday morning in Grandin Village
A beautiful Saturday morning in Grandin Village

This past Saturday was so beautiful I just had to get out and do something. Since I abhor most yardwork, I chose to wander around Grandin Village neighborhood and check out some of the shops. I live in Wasena, so it’s not a big journey over, but regardless of how much time I spend in the area, I always find something new and noteworthy when I go.

This time was no exception. The morning was off to a quiet start when I first arrived, but an hour later, more people were showing up to shop, visit the Roanoke Natural Foods Co-Op for fresh veggies, or pick up Grandin Theatre movie tickets for their early afternoon showing.

In case you’ve never been to the Grandin area, here’s how the VA is for Lovers Historic Sites page describes it:

Historic Grandin Village, located just two miles from downtown Roanoke, has something for everyone. Nestled in a charming 1920s’ neighborhood shops and restaurants range from elegant to quirky to everything in between. Southern hospitality and a friendly face welcome you at each stop.

Here shoppers can find: a restored 1930s movie theatre, old-fashioned ice cream parlor, various restaurants, outdoor dining, live music, natural foods, pharmacy, gifts, local artisans, fine furniture, vintage clothing, a used bookstore, banks, post office, service stations, hair salons and so much more! Over 80 businesses in one square mile.

One of my favorite places to drop in when clothes-shopping is Urban Gypsy. With unique clothes at reasonable prices, a friendly atmosphere, and stuff for everyone (including your pet), it’s easy to get lost in there for a while just looking around. Included in the slideshow are some great fall pieces (seriously, someone buy me that cozy knit sweater), including ridiculously cute wrist bags at only $24, and little gift ideas for your best gals (or Fido!).

Also included in my Grandin stops is Pop’s Ice Cream and Soda Bar, the old-fashioned ice cream parlor with bar stools, board games, and great ice cream from Homestead Creamery. With a vegetarian menu (including the best, biggest variety of grilled cheeses in town), lots of gluten-free dessert options, and so many choices of sweet treats, you can’t go wrong. I even had engagement shots taken there last summer! (Don’t ask my husband if I share sundaes; he’ll only laugh at you.)

And that’s a peek at Grandin Village! Make sure to check out the slideshow. (Please forgive the cell phone photos – my camera lens broke that morning, but I refused to be deterred.) You’ll see a beautiful day in Grandin, plus a few fashionable finds and the best seat in Pop’s (hint: they’re all perfect!).
