Pet’s Name: Roscoe the Wonder Mutt

Owners: Mark Lambert, Roanoke County

Breed: Beagle

Age: 10

Gender: Male

Gets his/her shots and pet care at: Roanoke Animal Hospital

Your Pet’s Story: Roscoe was rescued me when he came to live me with from the Roanoke SPCA in 2007. I had lost my previous beagle just three weeks before that and was grieving badly. I finally decided my house was just too darned quiet and I need a new friend. When I went to the SPCA, I specifically asked to meet beagles. Roscoe the Wonder Mutt was the one and only choice. He came into the play area and ripped some newspaper to shreds, dove into a pile of toys and peed on a wall, all within seconds. And then, he came over to me and collapsed in my lap. I knew this was my guy and he’s been my constant companion ever since!

Favorite Place to Play: Our back yard in North Roanoke with his canine housemates.

Favorite Treat: Anything edible. Roscoe is much like a goat, you see. If he can eat it, he will…and has.

Favorite Toy: Lamby, his little lamb-shaped squeaky.

Best Trick: Roscoe knows many tricks, but his favorite is to shake hands in exchange for a doggie biscuit.

Best Advice for Pet Owners: Before going to a breeder, check your local SPCA or animal shelter for your new best friend. There are tons of great dogs, cats and other critters just waiting to go home with you!

Pet’s Name: Seminole

Owner: Cynthia Cooper, Roanoke City

Breed: Pitbull

Age: 1 year, 4 months

Gender: Female

Gets his/her shots and pet care at: Angels of Assisi

Your Pet’s Story: I was looking for another dog for my husband and drove 45mins. to pick up a pitbull puppy I saw in an ad. On the long ride home, she sat in my lap and at that moment is when we must have bonded. She turned out to be my little fur baby and is always by my side, she is like my little shadow. She has such a wonderful personality. If I’m not feeling good, she stays with me and sleeps. She has been a huge help to me, health wise. She LOVES attention and will sit, whine and bark at me until she gets her way to sit in my lap.

Favorite Place to Play: She loves to play with our other dog in our backyard or runs through the house after our kids.

Favorite Treat: She LOVES peanut butter!

Favorite Toy: Anything that is yours becomes her toy.

Best Trick: She is good at forming words through her whining.

Best Advice for Pet Owners: Give them all the love and attention in the world. They become your fur baby!

Pet’s Name: Smokey & Trixie

Owner: Sherry Abrams, Roanoke City

Breed: Long Hair Chihuahua & Pomerian

Age: 7 and 13

Gender: Female

Gets his/her shots and pet care at: Angels of Assisi

Your Pet’s Story: Smokey & Trixie have been at the shelter, Angels of Assisi for several months. Their owner died and specified they be adopted as a pair! Since they are senior dogs and had to come as a pair; no one adopted them! I fell in love with the two! They are very loving and happy. We are so glad they are out of the cage they shared and now, sharing our home! We love Smokey & Trixie and they are now members of our family!

Favorite Place to Play: Smokey & Trixie love the snow! I love to see them run and leap around in the powdery snow!

Favorite Treat: Dental soft bones (senior teeth!)

Favorite Toy: Not a toy…but, they like to sleep with my old silk slips!

Best Trick: Falling on their back for you to rub their tummies

Best Advice for Pet Owners: Be consistent, loving, and compassionate to your pets! They give unconditional love to you and depend on your care. Keep their shots up to date, feed them nutritious food, and exercise by talking daily walks.
