Join us for a multi-week blog series as we share some of YOUR favorite pet stories. Thank you for sharing them with us!

Pet’s Name: Keaton

Owners: Angie Petty, Salem

Breed: Shepherd Doodle (Poodle and German Shepherd Mix)

Age: 3.5

Gender: Male

Gets his/her shots and pet care at: DeRolf Animal Hospital

Your Pet’s Story: When I began taking Keaton to normal obedience training as a puppy, it was clear that he was a special dog. He was so mild mannered, calm and eager to please, I decided I needed to share this sweet gift of a dog with the world. In talking to others, I discovered the world of animal assisted therapy. Keaton and I trained and were able to pass the test to be a therapy team when he was only a year and a half old. Since that time, Keaton has put many smiles on many faces, young and old. We routinely visit a local hospital, nursing home, and work with at-risk teens. Keaton is blessing to all he meets.

Favorite Place to Play: In the field near our friend Linda’s house.

Favorite Treat: Raw hides

Favorite Toy: Currently, Keaton’s favorite toy is what is left of a stuffed gingerbread man that he received for Christmas.

Best Trick: Keaton can wave! This trick works well for patients or residents who are not dog people and don’t want to pet Keaton, but would like to look at him, because he is so cute and interesting.

Best Advice for Pet Owners: Love your pet like another family member. If they happen to have a special gift or personality, consider sharing that with others.

Pet’s Name: Digby

Owner: Joshua England, Roanoke City

Breed: Lab/ beagle

Age: 3 years

Gender: Male

Gets his/her shots and pet care at: Roanoke animal hospital

Your Pet’s Story: When we were finding our dog, Digby was among all of his brothers and sisters at the shelter. Sadly, he was getting trampled over and sometimes looked like he just wanted to just give up. His puppy social awkwardness is why we got him. He was shy at first but now has become is his own fierce doggie self. He is now a happy superstar.

Favorite Place to Play: Highland dog park or the Appalachian Trail

Favorite Treat: Peanut butter

Favorite Toy: Rubber alien squeaky toy

Best Trick: He runs upstairs and goes to his bedroom to jump in bed upon the command of “go to bed”.

Best Advice for Pet Owners: Love your dog with lots of petting morning, noon, and night. Always look into his or her eyes with love because the dogs can feel through your facial expressions and eyes. Be disciplined in training from the beginning because your dog craves guidance and needs good parents.

Pet’s Name: Sky

Owner: Chelsey Jones, Lynchburg

Breed: Beagle/ Jack Russell Terrier

Gender: Female

Gets his/her shots and pet care at: Timberlake Animal Hospital

Your Pet’s Story: Sky is a rescue dog I recently got. She is Shy, but we are working on socialization skills and enjoying her new home.

Favorite Place to Play: The house
